Considering Matthew Shepard

Considering Matthew Shepard is the sung, true story of a young man from Laramie, Wyoming. In 1998, Matthew was kidnapped, beaten, and left to die tied to a split-rail fence after attending an LGBTQ meeting on his college campus.

Written to mark the 20th anniversary since his death, Craig Hella Johnson responded with his first concert-length work, this modern day passion in three-part fusion oratorio form.

Texts by Hildegard of Bingen, Lesléa Newman, Michael Dennis Browne, Rumi, Matt’s personal journal, interviews and writings from his parents, newspaper reports come together to tell Matthew’s tale of light rising from darkness.
